Amber is the fossilized resin of conifers (cone-bearing trees) that existed mainly during the Paleogene historic period. That means that most of the amber as we know it today actually started forming 35 to 60 million years ago. Sometimes amber has inclusions. These are bits of organic material, such as twigs, leaves or, often, insects that had been captured by the sticky, gooey, tree resin millions of years ago. The inclusions only add to the infinite variety that characterizes amber. Amber is always so warm to the touch. That is why some primitive humans thought it to be solidified sunshine. Throughout the Middle Ages in Europe amber was valued as more precious than gold. It was believed to provide physical and spiritual benefits to its wearer, including treatment for respiratory diseases and arthritis. In order to make an amber adornment, each piece is individually hand-carved and polished to bring out its inherent beauty, and fashioned into unique jewelry consisted of no two pieces alike.
