In the first through third centuries there was an extensive trade system built around amber stones. The Roman Empire and its colonies would transport amber to and from different markets in the region via the "amber road". The largest pieces that were transported weighed over 4 kg. (about 9 pounds). Along this trade road amber was stored at certain intermediate points to ensure its security. Three such warehouses with 3 tons of amber have been found in the areas surrounding Wroclaw, Poland. Amber was treasured by all, and was even referred to as northern gold in Greece. In times of Emperor Nero (54-68 AD) the value of a small amber statuette was greater than that of a young healthy slave. Transparent reddish or golden amber was especially valuable and was used to adorn small medical implements and utensils. Opaque amber was used only in the manufacture of incenses. Today, the Baltic regions of Poland still revere amber as a precious stone, and the people can even it now without threat of persecution.
